How do I get the rear door lock on my '94 Isuzu Rodeo to lock?

The rear door lock stays popped out. It will pop unscheduled the window but it does not lock. Is the lock supposed to stay pushed in to lock? The car is occupied but new to me so I am trying to figure things out still. My key doesn't go into the lock so I need some daily help
