Help with turn signal switch/lever in a 1998 Mazda 626 LX?

I would like to supersede the turn signal lever on my 1998 Mazda 626 LX.
It no longer goes accelerate to flash high beams, and the left directional sticks at times.
Is this demanding? Do I just un-screw the piece under the steering wheel to access?
